    Hi guys/gals,

Registered today. Newbie to WP. I’ve poured over the Codex but I’m having a few conceptual problems with the WP install (not done it yet) and implementation.

Here’s what I’d LIKE to do… wondering if it is possible:

    1) Install WP on my Mac OSX locally
    2) Install WP on webserver
    3) Work up various designs and experiment with the local install offline
    4) Version control the local WP (site design mainly)
    5) Make blog entries to local WP
    6) Upload the lastest design version of the site to the Internet
    7) Upload blog entries in local WP to Net WP

    Any help gratefully received.
    Thanks,
    Jamie

  • I am doing the exact same thing, except on Windows.

You just need to have Apache (or another server software), PHP, and MySQL installed on your machine.

I developed my layout and plugins locally and then uploaded them to my webserver.

Uploading individual blog entires is another matter as they’re all in one table. You can upload your whole local dev database and change the paths though. Once you get it up and running though, I’d just stick to writing anything you want to show up on your site at your site and not locally.

Yup thanks for that… working up Apache/PHP/MySPL on OSX

It’s just I’m dialup with 4 hours / day. So I’d like to design the site locally (which I think will be very time consuming) – so lengthy net access is not an option.
    .
I’m hot on version control and also want the independence of a locally backed up WP (done hourly on my sys)… so if the Net site goes down I can relocate easily.

Thanks for the comment on the blogs being in one db… maybe an issue on dialup!

Holy crap, I’ve never even heard of such a thing…

Are you in some country where the Internet is really expensive or something? If not, you should find a better ISP. ??

Heh, sticksville here, no DSL or cable (probably one of the last communities in UK to get it). So if I go over 4 hours/day I’ll bust my monthly limit and end up getting a more expensive account! So until broadband arrives, I have to keep my net access strictly controlled.

The issue is BT not wanting to upgrade exchanges with few subscribers to broadband…
So now you understand why I want to work up WP locally, fine tune it, then mirror to netsite.

    Jamie

Yeah, I read an article a while back by an American who moved to the UK about how rediculous BT is. You have my condolences. ??
