Load one full-screen image at a time instead of all of them?

While there are quite a few galleries and images, the plugin is caching ALL full-resolution images. Is there not a way to set the slider to load one at a time instead? That page is over 40MB in size…
I think an alternative layout would be to have just the thumbnails displayed and when one is clicked on, it opens up a lightbox.
