LiveJournal Import options needed

I’m trying to import my LiveJournal XML files into WordPress. I’d like all the uploaded posts to be “private” or “pending review”, so that I can review their content before making them public. (I’d also like to apply the tag “imported from lj” to all of them, but that’s less important.)

I’ve tried editing an XML file by hand, but– short of completely converting an LJ-style XML file into a WP-style XML file– I don’t know how to make WP apply the right tags/status to an uploaded post.

Then I thought perhaps I could create a user profile that would be authorized as a Contributor… but Contributors can’t import.

I’ve been poking around for a plugin that would serve my purposes, but haven’t found one yet.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
