• This is a bit of a ramble, but I want to get all the info into the post.

I was a volunteer running this site https://rbspto.org/ but my duties ended in June. Someone else was supposed to begin maintaining it, but did not. I was alerted to the fact that the site is now from 2008. When I login to WP, all seems well. When I looked in the public_html directory, there are huge HTML files from 8/23/15 to 8/31/15, which I think means the site was hacked. So, I live chatted with HostGator and they said the site was not hacked and they only host websites. They don’t help fix them.

I sadly do not have a local backup of the site. But if the most current posts and pages show up in the dashboard, then I’m hopeful I can publish them to update the site. If you need more information, please let me know. Thank you!

Oh yeah, that is massively hacked, all those .html pages, wow. ??

And https://rbspto.org/blog/ is pretty messed up too.

Remain calm and carefully follow this guide. When you’re done, you may want to implement some (if not all) of the recommended security measures.

Fingers crossed that helps in some way, best of luck!

Thanks James! So, once I clean it up (somehow), I’m not sure how to get the current posts that I see on the WP Dashboard published to the site? And can I back them up from the Dashboard, so I have a local file?

If they’re in the Dashboard, they’ll be on the site, it’s just that everything’s really messed up.

Once everything is cleaned up, you should be back in working order. If not, try downloading WordPress again and delete then replace your copies of everything except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies from the download. This will effectively replace all of your core files without damaging your content and settings. Some uploaders tend to be unreliable when overwriting files, so don’t forget to delete the original files before replacing them.

Even though it sounds tempting to just do that first, follow the hack guide first, as you have to find and remove the vector they used to mess everything up in the first place.

Sounds good, James. I will definitely follow the hack guide first. Thanks for your help!
