    Hi,

One of my sites automatically upgraded to 3.9.1 earlier this evening, then a couple of hours later I got an email saying it had automatically upgraded to an alpha version WordPress 4.0-alpha-20140507.

On the wordpress updates page in admin it says: BETA TESTERS: This site is set up to install updates of future beta versions automatically. I’m pretty sure I never set this, though I won’t rule out myself making a mistake. Is it possible that there was a bug that caused this?

I can’t find anywhere that controls what updates should apply, though I don’t recall setting it up to install beta and alpha versions. From searching I found something called a beta tester plugin, though I don’t have any such plugin installed on my sites.

I’m a bit lost at this point as to what is going on, where I would turn automatic updates off or check the settings etc. I’m happy enough with finalised updates being automatic but I’d rather not be installing beta and alpha versions.

To fix this problem, you just need to change the version number in ONE file. No manual downgrading required.

    Hi Stephen

Thank you so much for helping. I have just done one site and it seems to be OK.

I changed the the wp_version in /wp-includes/version.php from 4.0-alpha to 3.9 as instructed. It immediately told me there was a new version vailable and prompted me to upgade to 3.9.1 which I did. Does it work if you change the version to 3.9.1 in version, php? Would it be a bit quicker.

Also how long before the others get auto updated to some beta? as it’s the middle of the night and I want to go to bed!

    Your advice is appreciated

OK, I think I got it. (The comments about manual downgrades put me on the wrong track at first.)

@hlanggo Follow the steps in this post.

Edit: Oh you got it ??

Yes, I got it. Didn’t read your post carefully at first since I was dreading having to manually downgrade. (I think that section in the upgrading page should be removed as this step is so much more simple.)

The key step is just to change the wp-version number in one file so you downgrade with one-click.

    Cool and your welcome ??

Not really, not entirely sure, I haven’t tested this, in theory I may be slightly quicker though I’m not sure you would notice.

As stated I haven’t tested this method and I’d suggest staying with the method we have tested, compounding any issues here is not what we want right now ??

Also how long before the others get auto updated to some beta? as it’s the middle of the night and I want to go to bed!

I haven’t tested this for a while but I think it will deliver the latest ‘nightly’, thus this is a once per day update.

If you need to scoot off for the night, that shouldn’t be an issue, the same process to fix it will work tomorrow. ??

There you go, another problem. Tried another site and got:

    “Could not copy file.: wordpress/wp-admin/includes/dashboard.php
    Installation Failed”

    What now?

Seriously I have had a day of bad stuff following a week of bad stuff. I can do without all this!

Which specific section? I see that codex article as ‘Upgrading’, nothing there on ‘Downgrading’

I think any version number below 3.9 would worked. I changed it to 3.8.3

    @lepussaliens

    ??

I was under the impression that to downgrade manually would involve the same steps as upgrading manually.

@hlanggo My previous comment was based on the codex article you linked to before editing your post ??

Stephen do you have any suggestions for my issue?

@lepussaliens Was it a timeout issue or is the site noe completely broken?

If it was a timeout are you able to kick off the process again?

I am stuck on 3.9. I have tried it again a couple of times and it give the same result.

Having just done it on the same server it seems odd to be a time out problem though I have had issues before and had to increase the timeout on the server

If that site has now reverted back to 3.9 you should have two options available:
    1: Re-Install 3.9.1 en_GB
    2: Re-Install 3.9.1 en_US

Try installing the en_US version and once complete you should still have the en_GB option available.
