• Hi.
I need your experience and tips about upgrading a live multisite installation (14.000 blogs) and Buddypress from 3.0.5 to 3.3.
Is it possible to upgrade our live site without having a downtime?
Of course we will do the upgrade first into a developmemt server but how should we approche the live site?
    1) Should we juct copy the final development version (including new plugins versions and Buddypress version) into our live servers?
    2) Should we “shut down” the live site in order to unistall Buddypress, plugins etc and then make a same manual upgrade keeping the site down for hours?

And what about the “Update Network” button after the upgrade? In last upgrade this process took about 8 hours for all our blogs. Is it safe to enable access to our site, while the updating network is still running?
Can we activate the plugins before the update network is complete?

    Thanks a ton!!! in advance.

    Lena

Never. You ALWAYS have a brief outage while upgrading. It’s the nature of the beast. That said, it won’t be more than a few minutes.

At 14,000 blogs, I’m not surprised… Once you update the files, it should be okay to access the site while the network tables upgrade.

    Thanks Ipstenu for your answer.
Which approach do you think is the best for the live site upgrade?
1 or 2 (see my previous posts).
I think 2 is the correct, but I don’t want to have a long downtime.

I think BuddyPress being active won’t matter since you have that many blogs. But I’ll ask around if it’s okay to keep using your site while the upgrade runs. I want to say yes, but I don’t have that many subsites.

    Yes.

And that same update network action happens if users hit the admin area of the subsites.

Ipstenu and Andrea_r thank you both for your answers very, very much.
