Listing categories with posts underneath

  • Been trying to figure this out on my own for over a week and it’s time to ask around for an answer.

    Trying to achieve this, basically…
    1. Category 1
    2. Category 2 (highlighted)
    a. Post 1
    b. Post 2 (current post, highlighted)
    c. Post 3
    3. Category 3
    4. Category 4

    I am trying to make this happen using one page/template, as opposed to making a separate page for each category (which I can be lazy and do, but I know there’s a more elegant way). Been through all of the documentation, so maybe I’m just missing something. Any Suggestions would be VERY appreciated.

  • where is this supposed to get shown?

    – in a single post?
    – in a category archive?
    – in both situations?

    – what if in the index page or other archives?

    do you want to show a list of all categories?

    and with all posts of the active category / of the categories of the active post?

    example 1:
    in category archive of category 3:
    highlight category 3; show all posts of the highlighted category.

    example 2:
    in single post 2:
    show all categories and highlight the categories of the post 2;
    show all posts of each highlighted category, highlight post 2.

    It would be acting as a menu off to the side, I would be creating a template specifically for this page (or technically it would be a post-template?

    It’s going to be acting as a menu for some portfolio items, so it would be a list of specific categories (assuming that I will probably have news items as well, so it would just be categories related to portfolio items).

    Oh, and yes, with all posts of the active category shown underneath (with the active category and active post both highlighted).
