List of authors and categories

I’m building https://www.invertedsanity.com/wp and as you can see I want that sidebar to list as -<categories they have posts under>, right now i’m doing it with subcategories, but that’s messy and doesn’t let two authors write in the same category so is there any way to do it the “right” way?
