It ocurred to me I might create a default taxonomy for CPT’s without one.

Also, for those CPT’s that do have taxonomies, I’m looking to add an item to menus that lists all taxonomies – not posts.

    Hi dwcouch,

thanks for your message. It must be because I have the flu right now, but I don’t understand what you want to do exactly. Can you give me a specific example?

In any case, I’m afraid I won’t be extending the plugin much. As it is, I’ve found very little response from the community regarding help with beta testing and I won’t be adding any functionality until I’ve released version 1.0 of my plugin.

    Kind regards,
    Diana

Hello Diana, thank you for the reply.

Sorry if I confused – I’m always trying to keep a clear head when it comes to the distinctions between Custom Post Types, and Taxonomies.

I’d like to be able to add a menu item that lists ALL posts of a custom post type – regardless of what Taxonomy if any it is assigned to. In some cases I have created CPT’s that have no further distinction (taxonomies) that the post type. In this case Bios. Bios DO NOT have any taxonomies registered such as, manager, artisan, project manager, etc.

If I understand your plugin correctly, the menu items created by your plugin list posts of a taxonomy, whether it be a native WP Taxonomy (Categories & Tags) or a Taxonomy of a Custom Post Type. So in order to use your plugin to list ANY Bios, I would need to at least register a default taxonomy for my Bios CPT.

I hope that helps to clarify.
And that you are now well again.
    Thank you!

Just from the GUI Point of View – how would you do that? Right now, the Plugin works that you pick a Category, put it in the Menu (as a single menu item), check the Box, and it magically “expands” that Category.

Which Item would you put in the Menu in the first place? There’s no such Item as “every Post Category” or something like that.

I don’t think that your request is possible or reasonable.

And then … there are many workarounds readily available.

Do you have only a few posts (less than 10)? Then, maintaining the list manually would be your best bet.

And if you have more than 10 … then I don’t think stuffing them all in the Menu is a good idea in the first place. You’re better off with an Archive with excerpts, or any other mechanism (Sidebar, …) that WordPress already provides.

    Hi both,

wescht, thank you for your input on this as well.
David, the plugin indeed intends to offer functionality to list all posts of a Category, Tag, or custom taxonomy.

If I understand correctly, you want to list all posts of a Custom Post Type. (As opposed to listing all posts of a Taxonomy.)

If you look at Appearance > Menus, the left sidebar does not offer any functionality that mirrors “Categories” or “Tags”. That is, there is a “bring me to a page with all posts in this Category/Tag”, but there is no “bring me to a page with all posts of this Custom Post Type”. In other words, there is, like wescht points out, nothing to attach your desired behavior to.

“So in order to use your plugin to list ANY Bios, I would need to at least register a default taxonomy for my Bios CPT.”

If I understand correctly what you want, then yes, your best bet is to create a custom taxonomy for your Custom Post Types.

    Kind regards,
    Diana
