Linking single-post version of featured image to specified off-site URL

    I am using the wpexplorer Neptune WordPress theme under WP 3.5; I am in the midst of a very confusing situation.

    The featured image for a given portfolio item is shown on the website’s homepage and is , by default, set to link to that item’s single-page. Upon arriving at the item’s page, a slightly larger version of the featured image is displayed.

    I am hoping to keep the thumbnail seen on the homepage linked to the single page, but I want to link the larger version seen on the item’s single-page to a specific offsite URL, e.g. https://xyz.org/abc.html.

    I am not proficient in PHP, so does anyone have a suggestion on how this custom featured-image linking could be accomplished with a plugin?
