• Hi,

Sorry I am really new to this, so its probably a stupid question. I have been all over the admin page and I see where I can add a page and a menu item. But how do I link the two? How do I create a menu item that opens a page?

    thanks

  • I think while you post a new page, an item linking to it will appear in the menu.. otherwise, you can set up a new custom menu, go to Appearance >> Menus, while creating a new menu use Custom Links option to add a custom link pointing to that page.. After all, save the menu, then go to Manage Locations tab, choose your custom menu to appear as the primary menu, then save everything..

Appearance / Menus > Custom Links > Add the URL and the Link Text (Menu Item).
    or
Menus > Widgets > Custom Menu, you can only add this to your sidebar or footer. Add the Widget. Create a Title and select a menu. Then Save.

    Hope this helps.

Actually you don’t need a “custom link” to link a menu item to a Page in Custom Menus.

Your Theme probably has a default menu of “list all pages” (wp_list_pages) if there is NOT a custom menu setup.

IF you setup a Custom Menu (Appearance>Menus), all you have to do (assuming the Page is published and ready to go) is to Add the Page to the correct menu (look at the top to see which menu you’re seeing, if there are none, create one), drag it to where you want it to be in the order, and Save the Menu…be sure that menu is assigned to a menu location (for example your Theme may have a menu location for the top of the page and a menu location for the footer).

If you want to change how the menu item is named, you just click on that menu item and rename the title of it….that doesn’t change the Page name, just the name in the Menu (this is useful when you have a long page name, but want the menu item to be short – example: your Page is named “Meet Our Team” but you want the menu to just say “Team”).

Custom Links can be useful for other things – offsite links, file downloads, etc.

Thanks…and what is the URL of my page?

You don’t need to know the URL.

First, create and Publish a Page.

    Next, go to Appearance>Menus

Do you have a custom menu setup already that you want to add your new page to?

If yes, look at the module that says Pages – you should see your new page there – if not look for a link that says “All Pages” and click on it.

Once you see your new page, check the box next to it and then click on Add to Menu.

Your new Page will appear at the bottom of the menu (last item). You can drag it up higher if you want to, watch out for insets! If it gets inset then it becomes a sub-page so make sure it’s flush left.

Then click on Save to save the menu.

Be sure that menu is assigned to a location.

That’s all there is to it.

Thanks, that worked….But suppose I want to know the URL because I want to create a custom link..how do I find the URL?

    Thanks
