Suddenly all of my links to external sites are showing as strikethrough text. They now appear to be cancelled with nothing to replace them, but they do work as expected. Except no one will click on strikethrough text.

    I’ve checked out
? the code in the link to be sure it doesn’t indicate “strikethrough text”
? the old external links, created before 5 days ago, and they are still plain text
? the html code to see if there’s anything different about the coding of these links and ones on other pages (to external sites)
? I had activated several plugins, and I went back and deactivated all of them (still giving me strikethroughs)
? undoing it by using the strikethrough command icon.

I’m out of ideas why this suddenly started happening. Can anyone guess how this might have happened?

    Please see:
    https://adhocgroup.net/biz-planning/grant-readiness/
where all the links are strikethroughs
    and
    https://adhocgroup.net/biz-planning/strategic-grant-planning/
where the strikethroughs were showing up but I edited the link codes and they came out OK. I tried the same edits on the above page and there was no correction.
    and
    https://adhocgroup.net/freelance/learn-job-skills/writing-skills/b2c-writing-opportunities/
where these are all external links but showed correctly from the start (never showed any strikethroughs). These were all done before five days ago.

Thanks for any help you can offer.
    Michele

I’m not seeing strikethough on links on any of those pages – try looking at the site while not logged in, from your phone, different computer etc.

This is more likely to be caused by CSS than HTML code.

Use your browser’s developer tools – right-click on any link and choose “Inspect Element”. You can check which CSS styles affect any HTML element.

Are you using a plugin for checking broken links? I’ve known one do this.

    Hi Jason,
I spent some time on this after I posted my issue here and managed to fix the problem by changing the link (by removing the coupon code) and adding the code to the bottom of the page. But today I saw this strikethrough on another link, so I knew the problem persisted.

I did have “Broken Link Checker” installed and active. So, thanks to you’re suggestion, I turned it off and poof! The strikethroughs disappeared. Thank you so much. I wouldn’t have found that. And so glad that was the solution because I haven’t learned CSS or JS yet.

Even though I turned off all of the other plugins I added about the time this started, I left that one active because it’s really been helpful.

So, now my question is What broken link plugin can I replace this one with?

    Thank you sooooo much!

You don’t need to stop using Broken Link Checker. Check out its options because you can choose whether broken links are displayed with different CSS or not.

    Jason:
I’m so new at this I don’t know how to check out its options or how to access the CSS files. Is that something you can tell me without too much difficulty?

I know how to use FTP to get into the directories, so if I can access anything that way, I understand how to navigate that.

But I don’t know how to use WP dashboard menus to change plugin options. Maybe that’s the better way.

Am I asking for something really complicated?

OK, I just found the settings page for Broken Link Checker, so maybe I can fix this with what I have to work with. Thank you.

the Broken Link Checker settings let me remove the strikethrough command, so it’s done, and thank you.
