Link to Category pages with featured image

Hi all,

This might be really simple or complicated but I can not for the life of me figure out how to do this with or without plugins.

On my home page [ redundant link removed ] instead of having links to posts as shown, I am hoping to have the same layout with the featured image and title but put into categories instead. For instance, the first one could say “Hospitals” with a featured image I choose from one of our hospital posts and then the permalink is to the category page (/class/hospital/) and so on and so forth. How can this be done?

My goal is to make everything procedural and separated into categories for easy navigation.
