Link Spammer Interview

I was wondering how much persuasion the Reg would need to drop a little hint as to the identity of the spammer……

After reading the article, I felt like throttling this person named Sam. :X

Interesting to note was the comment regarding “abandoned” blogs. The spammers know that anybody who is keeping their site current will block/stop them from getting their spam posted, but they don’t care because it’s all of those neglected blogs that give them what they are looking for.

I was pondering in my moose-brain about a way to “show” the spammers that my site was maintained so they could simply do an “if maintained then skip” routine in their spambots and simply move along until they find the sites that are not kept up to date.

Yeah, I know, it’s only a dream, but dreaming is free and easy! ??

So…..if Blogger went through and killed off all their dead blogs, that ‘spaces’ thing that MSN created was also policed and other “free_just_sign_up” type things also did their share, while it may not remove all the abandoned blogs, it would do two things:
– give a truer picture of just how many “bloggers” there are (I speak as someone with at least 3 Blogs and a Xanga in my past)
– make the likes of “Sam” work harder

Or would it ?

OR it would mean that they would actualy hit our active blogs more often and harder.

Good point, TG. Reality is that most spammers are working to find ways of getting their crap onto as many sites as possible, whether those sites are active or abandoned.

Maybe somebody should write a snooper that looks for those unprotected proxy servers all over the place and publically “out” them in hopes that the managers and sysadmins of those servers will do something about the spammers using them to do their work.

Well, once there’s a way to take advantage of something provided for free (i.e. blog links), you can bet there will be someone who will.

Link spam and WordPress – even out of the box and with no plug-ins WordPress 1.2.2 has pretty nice features for fighting comment spam.

I can’t remember how I came upon it, but I onced stumbled upon an “abandoned” blog and it probably had 100 spam links in the comments.

I just don’t understand a person that leaves a blog just sitting there…well, I take that back. If they are using a free host they would…if they are paying for their hosting they are more likely not to leave it sitting there like that.

I honestly despise the “Sams” of the world. I am fortunate enough that the spam goes to moderation on mine…but, I just keep asking myself why don’t they realize their spam isn’t getting on, wise up and move on?

Frustrating to say the least.
