Link instead of shortcode?

Instead of using the shortcode to create the download box, I’d like to retrieve the link and create my own download link, ie, Download this file
Can this be done easily? I’ve been able to put in the shortcode and then view the source of the page to pick up the url to the file, but what a pain that is! Is there another way to do this?
