‘link category’ wont be edited

one of my link categories is jammed? for want of a better word. I have moved all the links to another category so it is empty, and it will not let me delete it in admin.

i was going to ask if I should manually delete it in database. But the category id number is ‘1’ and i read in another post that category ‘1’ is the call for all posts…
any ideas?

p.s. the reason why this started is because i have five link categories that are all being called in their own php widgets (i.e <?php wp_get_links(x); ?>). The rest work fine but the one that is giving me grief had a slightly different naming than the others. It was called ‘roll call (shuffled)’ the only one with brackets in the title & I noticed it was breaking my layout when i checked my site in IE (everything onward had no css, just output as links and the layout all over the joint). First I tried renaming the category to take out the brackets and admin said it was happening, but on my site it didn’t change….. now i can rename it to my hearts content but not delete. Even with the offending widget not in the sidebar (moved to ‘available widgets’) it is still breaking in IE at that point.
