line spacing when importing from MS Word

    I compose my posts in MS Word 7 then import them into the text editor in Word Press. Most of the time this works fine. But once in a while I get an extra line space that was not in the original. Delete Backspace etc will not remove the unwanted line in the WP text editor. Also, occasionally single spacing in the original shows up as double spacing in the WP text editor. I have tried saving the file in Word as plain text but the same problem still occurs when I import the file to WP.

  • Word adds a lot of non-web-compliant code, so the best solution is to not paste from Word. If you must have some kind of editor like that, try using Windows Live Writer.

    Or copy/save as first to a plain text editor to get rid of Word’s styling.

    Thanks. I may try the second idea first. Are you saying that even when I save as plain text within Word there is still styling code embedded? Certainly I can cut/paste to Notepad or some such as an intermediate step. I am not familiar with Windows Live Writer but I can find it if need be.

    Yes – that’s always a possibility.

    A way I’ve found around something like this in the WP text editor is to place the cursor before the first letter on the second line — the one where you want the line break to occur — and hit enter. Hitting enter at the end of the line above does not work, but hitting enter at the beginning of the second line seems to. It can be time-consuming, but it’s worked for me.

    Why not just create your posts using NotePad and cut out MS Word altogether?

    Duh! That would work. I tend to forget NotePad exists. I compose in a text editor because I often write posts days in advance of when I will need them, and I like to have an archive on my HD.

    I’m having the same issue. When I copy/paste text from Word into TextEdit, and then copy/paste from TextEdit into a WordPress post, I still get the extra spacing in between the lines.

    Thoughts?
