limit text inside tags

Hi all … i find new problem with no solution.

How to limit number of characters inside specified tags?
For example i using xlanguage and i need limit text inside <span=”en”></span> tags.
“More” funkcion or excerpt directly in php limite complete post and broke html/php funkcions ??
