Limit on private link request emails?

    I’m certain I saw something about a limit on how many private link request emails can be sent to prevent spam, and that for testing purposes an administrator is not subject to that limit. I can’t find the reference though, and what I’m seeing is that when I request a private link as an admin, it works, but as a not logged in user or just a contributor to the blog, it returns without success.

    Is there a limit, and how can it be adjusted? What I’ve been testing is a means to go directly to the request page so that users I have loaded via CSV can edit their information if they know their email address. I do this by calling the sign up page with “/?m=r”, which is what you get when you click on the link to retrieve a lost private link. Is there a better way to do this?

    I just finished reading the code, and it looks like you get a total of 3 retrieval requests per IP address per 24 hours unless you are an admin. This seems reasonable, although I think it might be useful to give some visible indication that the limit has been reached, as opposed to silently failing, particularly since this limit isn’t defined in the documentation anywhere that I could find.

    It’s a security feature, so I figured it would never come to that except for someone who doesn’t have any business typing stuff in, and why help such a person? That’s why it fails silently.

    If you want to let people know there is a limit, you could explain that on the page. If the situation on your site is such that this is likely to happen, I would suggest giving them a contact email to use if they just can’t get it to work.

    Of course, you could up the limit, but it should’t be taking your users so many times to get it right unless they just don’t understand what is expected of them.
