Limit Access to Post Page in Static Site Configuration

I’ve gone through plugins and codex but thought I ask the forum.

I have a static configured site (front page and designated post page). I would like to configure it so when the menu item that represents the post pages (blog) is clicked that visitor will be prompted to login or register at which point they can view the blog entries. I understand most of the plugins will not work that way and remember reading about this in the codex.

Any thoughts will be appreciated…
