    Hi Alexander,

I’m not a lawyer, but that article refers to the Facebook like button, not all like buttons in all cases.

The Jetpack Like button is an integrated feature of Jetpack, not something that is provided by, and sends data to a third party, as is the case with a Facebook button on a non-Facebook website.

it’s not entirely clear to me from https://jetpack.com/support/likes/#privacy whether data is transmitted before the user clicks the button or not.

Nothing is transmitted before the button is clicked. Before someone clicks the button we don’t have any data to transmit – the data indicated in the privacy section on the support page you link to is only collected the moment someone clicks the button.

It is also not clear to me whether a click on the “Like” button facilitates a “permission” to collect the data, if I need a specific permission in this instance, or if it is enough to explain the functionality in my Privacy Policy page.

For clarity on that you’ll need to consult an attorney who specialises on the European privacy laws and how they are interpreted in your specific country. We can only tell you what information any given feature of Jetpack collects, and for what purpose. We cannot advise you whether or not your specific use of the feature is compliant with any law.
