libxml bug seen with php5-fpm 5.4.15 and libxml2 2.7.8

I’m experiencing this exact problem on wordpress 3.5.1 with current versions of php and libxml, but unfortunately, this plugin doesn’t seem to fix it. Is there an updated way to restore the right angle brackets? I can’t figure out why this plugin doesn’t work. Can anyone give a hint on where to look? Could it be the xml parser libraries for php are regressing?
