Leverage Browser Caching

    Hello. First of all thank you for such a great plugin, it already speed up my website a lot, however I still have a question. I have followed all best practices in configuration plugin from your documentation, but for some reason when I check speed test, it always shows “Leverage browser caching” – F(0) in GTMetrix or any other tools. I’m just kinda lost, have double check all of the configurations under browser caching setting but it’s all the same, F(0). My images are compressed and all around 40kb. Is there anything I should configure on top of that? Thank you in advance!

    I am sorry about the issue you are experiencing and I am happy to assist you with this.
    I’ve checked the source of your website and the images have the directive cache-control: max-age=3600
    W3 Total Cache sets the Expires header lifetime for static files (images, etc) to 31536000 s (1 year)
    Can you please double-check the settings in Performance>Browser Cache>Media&Other files and see what is the Expires header lifetime there?
    If it’s set to 3600 please change it to 31536000 and save all settings and purge the cache.
    If it’s already set to 31536000 it means that you have some other rule in your .htaccess file, or the Browser Cache TTL is set on the Cloudflare level. Make sure to check the Cloudflare Browser Cache TTL and change it to respect the existing headers.

    Hello Marko,

    Thank you for your help. I did check browser cache configuration, and they are exactly the same a you suggested. By the way, i did check my .htaccess file, and it is completely empty. Maybe I should add some configurations there?

    Thank you for the information.
    This is very strange because all images and other static files have the x-powered-by: W3 Total Cache/0.14.4 header, meaning that this option is selected in Performance >Browser cache and W3 Total Cache added the rules.
    Can you please share which .htaccess have you checked? It should be in the root of your website.

    And I’ve found here the issue is. Near the bottom of your .htaccess there are the following rules:

    Thank you for the information.
    The first thing that is strange is that the rules mod_expires are in the # BEGIN WordPress and # END WordPress section of the .htaccess.
    Possibly some other plugin maybe adding those rules but I cannot be sure about it.
    YOu should reach out to your host and check with them what might be adding the cache-control: max-age=3600 instead of the W3TC directive. Possibly there are some rules in the httpd.conf file.
    Please reach out to your host for assistance with this and let us know how it goes.

    Hello, I have contacted the host, and they helped me to delelte that code part, abd insert the code you suggested. Website is running fine, however I still see no change to the browser leverage cache, it is still F(0).

    Thank you for the information.
    Yes, it looks correct. Ideally, the Core wp rules and PHP rules should be at the bottom of the .htaccess
    Here is the problem. I’ve inspected your website and this is what I can see for one of your images (this applies to all images) https://i.imgur.com/FS7CcfQ.png
    As you can see the max-age directive is 3600 (1 hour). If you check the W3 total Cache rules you can see the following:

ExpiresByType image/png A31536000

    As you can see the expires header is set to 31536000 (1 Year).
    So the expires header is set for the images, but not by W3 Total Cache. Meaning something is adding the directive which overrules the W3TC directive and apparently this is not n your .htaccess.
    There are two things that may be the cause of this. The first one (unlikely) is the Cloudflare itself. In the Cloudflare console, you can check for the Browser TTL rules that might be setting the expires header 3600s. This is unlikely because Cloudflare sets the Browser TTL for all static files including images, fonts, etc.
    The second and most likely cause of this is that the rule is set The main configuration file called httpd.conf.
    As I can see your website is hosted on Bluehost, so you should check with the support of your hosting provider to see if the directive is set on the server level.
    I can also see the x-endurance-cache-level: 1 header which means that the Bluehost endurance cache is also enabled and it’s not recommended to use multiple layers of caching so you should check with your hosting provider and disable it.
