Leaving Yahoo Hosting Advice/Concerns

    Hi,

    Our WP is hosted by Yahoo and WP is the main site. We’re thinking of leaving Yahoo mainly because they don’t allow users to have a .htaccess file. “Security,” they say.

    We’ve only used Yahoo, have spent the last few months learning how to make changes to files, css, etc. So, we’ve learned a few things and with the help of the codex and the people here, we can achieve things. We don’t yet have a lot of content, so it’s not a big issue, but we have built forums using bbpress and have made changes to a template. We don’t register users (except ourselves, of course).

    But, what we need to know is what additional things do we need to think about when leaving Yahoo? Because we have no .htaccess, how will this affect a move? I assume we’ll have to do something differently after a move.

    Thoughts?

  • .htaccess should be the very last thing to worry about… It will NOT efect the move in any way. That file is used ONLY if you want the so-called nice permalinks. So, don’t be obsessed about it ??

    read the info on the link moshu provided and as long as you follow it you will fare ok.

    By the way, in moving your site, remember that a WordPress site consists both of the WordPress files AND the database. I’m going to guess that bbpress is the same way.

    So you’ll need backups both of your site files and your database(s).

    Yes, I think I am a bit obsessed with htaccess so it’s good to hear Moshu say it’s no big deal.

    Sort of an important ONLY…

    But to answer part of the original question, I’d look ahead to where you are moving and check to see if they offer a variety of levels of service. I moved from Yahoo to Bluehost and now wish I’d selected a different destination. Not because Bluehost is bad at what they do, but because they only offer shared hosting.

    Shared hosting means you share a server with a lot of other websites. There are two higher levels of service – VPS (virtual partitioned server) and dedicated server. If you think your traffic might go up dramatically in the near future, try to find a host that offers all three levels of service so you can upgrade on the fly (more or less) without moving your domain.

    Speaking of which, be aware that moving a domain away from Yahoo/Melbourne IT takes the full eight days from the time you figure out how to make the official move request. Yahoo will say it’s Melbourne’s job, Melbourne will say it’s Yahoo’s job. By default, the domain will move at the end of the eight day waiting period.
