• I read a lot of accounts of people leaving WordPress.com for www.remarpro.com but I’m thinking of the reverse. I’ve had a WordPress site for years through different hosting companies – currently through Siteground. My renewal is coming up and I’m looking at WordPress.com Pro Account. I spend all day in WordPress for my job so I’m looking for an easier solution for my own site (and cheaper than siteground)

    – Currently using a full site editing theme (Frost)
    – Only run a small amount of plugins and could easily not have them
    – Blog/photo site not super crazy stuff here [ redundant link removed ]

Anyone switched from a hosting company to WordPress.com? What are you thoughts? Any downside?

Thanks. That thread is 10 years old and it seems like the .com hosting is more of a managed hosting something like a wpengine or even squarespace.

The biggest difference is that you don’t have final control over everything. You have to rely on what .com allows you to have, and what you can get in your package. You also don’t have any sort of direct access to your sites data/database so if you need that at all, you’ll be out of luck.

With all of that on mind, if you want somethng managed that you can just use and don’t need to worry about the low-level admin stuff (like updates, fixes, server issues, etc), then it’s a good option.

Much of this is legacy info that’s not the case any longer.

With the new PRO plan, WordPress.com is only offering the new platform previously available to “Business” and “Ecommerce” subscribers.

So while it’s still a managed service, all paid users now have the ability to install any theme or plugin. Users also have direct FTP and database access (and indirectly via plugins).

Note that the cheaper plans are gone: there are now only two plans: FREE and a new PRO plan, with the PRO plan costing $15/month (currently only payable annually). Its also currently not possible to purchase a custom domain upgrade for the FREE plan, though this may come in the future.
