Is it legal (within the rules of the wordpress license) to lease out a system that I have built on wordpress?

For example, if i built a system that could handle meeting organization using wordpress. Would it then be legal for me to lease out that system to customers for a monthly fee?

    Cheers,

    Christopher

Not at all, but because WordPress is licensed under GPLv2, that means you would need to also release your WordPress-derivative system under GPLv2 as well.

Instead, why not just make this as a plugin for WordPress?

    James,

he could not charge for WordPress itself but for other non-WordPress itself he couuld technically speaking charge.

he could also charge for upgrades (like WordPress.com does), or theme authors do by providing their theme in a lite version then PRO version is paid.

He could certainly charge for a modified WordPress. The community wouldn’t be too happy with it, but that’s totally legal under the GPL.

Regarding “the community wouldn’t be too happy with it,” that’s why I’m suggesting he make a plugin instead.
