Hello! This question is regarding error messages in Google Search Console and how it relates to Core Web Vitals. I noticed there are about 50 URLs that “need improvement.” The errors are marked as “LCP issue: longer than 2.5s (mobile)” and all of these URLs are leading to web stories. Is there a way for me to fix this so that these errors don’t impact my Core Web Vitals in a negative way? (I have pictures I can send).

    Thanks!
    Jordan

As per your other thread, it looks like there’s a bigger issue with broken stories on your site that needs to be resolved first. Then we can take a better look at the LCP numbers for your site.

LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) measures loading performance and is primarily affected by slow server response times / resource load times.

One way to help improve load times is by enabling video cache in the Web Stories settings. Another is to talk to your hosting provider about possible server improvements and perhaps evaluate other options for hosting resources, such as setting up a so-called CDN. Many hosting providers offer CDN solutions, but there are also plugins that do that.

    Hi Pascal,

Just following up after un-breaking the stories—still interested to hear about LCP as they relate to these web stories, though I’ll also take a look at the video cache settings.

Another update: I already have the video cache settings enabled so nothing to change there.

I submitted a support ticket to my hosting company (Big Scoots) to ask about potential improvements and they said they don’t have a way to improve metrics on web stories.

    They said:
    “If you go to: https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fjordosworld.com%2Fweb-stories%2Fcreatine-all-you-need-to-know%2F

Scroll down, you will see the issue majorly lies within third party code which we cannot control.”

    Any suggestions from here?

LCP can be affected by multiple factors, external scripts like the ones from the Web Stories format ore just one.

While I’d recommend looking into reducing initial server response time, there is also some ongoing work on the Web Stories side to help further improve core web vitals such as LCP.

For the latter, there is a significant effort that started a few weeks ago that aims to meet some aggressive goals toward the end of the year to help improve these metrics. There’s nothing on your side that needs to be done to benefit from that.

For the former, improving server response time is something that can be done on your site. Things like using caching plugins or a CDN. Hence the recommendation to reach out to your hosting provider.

I’m excited to hear there’s ongoing work to improve core web vitals as they relate to web stories. That’s great news!

I’ll continue to work with my web hosting company to see if there’s a CDN option to improve response time.

I appreciate your help with this issue and I’ll continue to look into it.

    Thank you!
