Launched: CharlesPhoenix.com, and bless WordPress

  • Just wanted to (finally) show a WP site I’ve been involved with overhauling: CharlesPhoenix.com. This was a move from a static site to WP, with new look.

    Any feedback/suggestions about the site are appreciated. But mostly I just want to thank the “powers that be” and the fantastic bunch of folks (that’d be y’all) who provide and support vigorously WP. The active forums and plethora of plug-ins drove my choice of WP as the backend for Charles’ site — and I’ve no regrets.

    My search, and ultimate choice, was a long and painful one, so if any of you are on the fence about using WP I fully recommend taking the plunge, it really is a decent engine to build a custom site atop, and the learning curve is reasonable (I explored everything from Mambo, CMS Made Simple, TextPattern to commercial software before deciding WP).

    Anyway, mosey over and click around, then let me know your thoughts.

    Oh, ginormous props to the folks behind the installer – I eliminated several other packages at the get-go purely on the basis of klunky installs.

    Oh, failed to mention what the site is: Charles collects old (yes, “vintage?? and “retro??) kodachrome slides and shows them on the site, as well as delivering sold-out slide shows at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, plus he’s published several books featuring the slides as snapshots of days-of-yore, I was skeptical at first, but after attending one of his presentations where I and the audience had tears of laughter I was really excited to work on his site. It’s too rare to have a client you honestly believe in what they do, and such has been my working relationship with CP.

    There, an explanation and a plug. Bonus for me!

  • Nice work! I checked it out on Mac OS X / Safari and everything looked well behaved. The only thing I saw that struck me as a bit off gets down to personal taste, I suppose: the headline link color, especially in a:hover mode. Something closer to the colors in the graphics at the top of the page would be better perhaps? The background color in hover mode seems especially week (again in my opinion).

    No — that’s great feedback, thanks, vnbPaul, that’s exactly what i need to hear. I go “deer in the headlights” (thorne?) with style-guides, so locking down a consistent scheme is crucial. I’ll revisit these (most aren’t even conscious decisions, just evolve and I forget to check).

    It would be nice to give some credit to the WP developers somewhere on the site – even in tiny little letters – I couldn’t see any mention of WP anywhere?

    agreed, excellent point.

    I’m going to sell ’em on an about page, site’s colophon, include WordPress, plugins in use, phpList (the mailing list management app), and awstats (the site log analyzer, stats package)

    I’ll give a lengthier (read: way geeky) credits on my own site, too.

    Try #FF6F00 for the h2 a color and #FFC336 for h2 a:hover

    By the way, there’s a color utility I wrote several years ago that you might find helpful. Google ColorWrite for the location. There are better color choosers out there now but still none that make getting your color values into a CSS file any easier. It requires a Java Runtime Engine on your computer. If you are using a Mac (OS X) you already have that. If you’re on a PC or Linux box check the download page for how to find out if you need to install it (and where to get it).
