last modified date at posts

Hello
is it possible to show the last modified date of a post inline with or instead of the creation date?
can posts be sorted by modification and not by creation date on the frontpage?

In the meantime I found out how to show modification date, as it is already implemented in cenote_posted_on function, although it needed some adaption in CSS, in the if function checking modification time (get_the_time and get_the_modofcation_time just differed in seconds, although the post was nevered modified, and therefore there was always a modification date shown, even it is the same as post date) and additional text.
if it is possible to sort by modification date, that would be nice, but I’m good for now.
