• I’ve been noticing a lot of updates to the languages files, and I discovered that this directory (…/wp/wp-content/languages) is taking up 33 MB of disk space!

I only use English on my websites, so as far as I can tell, I don’t need these extra language files. I’d rather they not be taking up disk space. Is there any way we can disable them or something like that?

    Thanks for the help.

  • You should be able to remove those files without an issue. Just go in to that languages folder and remove any .mo or .po files for languages you don’t need.

    Hi Chris,

Thanks very much for your reply and suggestion. Wouldn’t the next automatic update of WordPress just put those files back again though?

I do not believe so. I believe they only update if they are present. The language updates are actually delivered separate of the Core WordPress updates.

Thanks again, Chris. I just went to the Languages directory and am not sure which files to keep! Nothing that jumps out as the obvious English file (assuming there is one, rather than it simply being the default built-in, while the others are add-ons).

    I’m seeing files beginning with…

    admin-
    admin-network-
    continents-cities-
    ms-
    zh-

…and various other prefixes and filenames. Any ideas which ones I should delete and which ones to keep? Sorry, I can’t figure out a way to copy just the filenames without typing them all manually.

    Wendy
