• Not knowing that Kubrick was now bundled with WordPress I simply updated my install as normal – only to find that in the process it overwrote my customized install of Kubrick!!!! Why in the world wasn’t there some kind of announcement in the downloads? Hours and Hours down the drain. I’m more than a little miffed.

    Two words, Keep Backups. Sorry.

And always check what files are about to be uploaded. It only takes a couple extra minutes to compare the old/new folders (or a matter of seconds if you can DIFF them), and you’ll know right away if something is going to be overwritten that shouldn’t be.

I never reuploud the wp-content directory — that is now where all your site specificstuff is.

yeah wp-content is rarely updated as it is. I never update that directory.

I never would have thought it a problem – I mean when was the last time a theme came bundled? and yeah, i should have made a back-up – for sure – but come on, is a heads up too much to ask? Bundling any theme with WordPress is worth some news I should think.

“By their nature these releases are unstable and should not be used anyplace where your data is important.”

That’s from the download page pointing to where the nightlies are kept. It is Beta software no matter how many people decide to use it on their “production” site. If you want to make sure that you get all of the latest information on those builds, you should be subscribed to the Beta e-mail list.

I’m not trying to scold you here or anything, but you cannot expect the dev team to make announcements to the general public regarding every change (even big ones) they make to alpha and beta software. That will all be made known when the official 1.5 release comes out. In other words, yes a “heads up” is too much to ask.

EDIT: I just wanted to add that I’m obviously not speaking for the developers here, just general beta practices. I’ve lost enough data in situations like that to know backups are essential.
