Knowledgeable novice starting over

  • I had set up my own site on inMotion, using an off-the-shelf WP theme. Almost entirely plain vanilla. Nothing exotic. Just mini-essays, photos, cartoons, and such—though I did have a custom persistent header image.

    Content was infected by malware. I had to trash the entire site and start over. Meanwhile, for better or worse, I’ve become a physically (and probably mentally) decrepit 79-yr-old.

    The Dashboard options have changed significantly since last time I did this. I don’t want to have to relearn everything. Nor do I want to stretch out my neck beneath the knee of WP.com.What I do

    It looks like you’re on the right path with your website! You’ve set up a great theme and are well on your way.

    WordPress, like other similar technologies, goes through frequent updates to make sure it stays up-to-speed and creates newer, better, and different features. That is as true with WordPress as it might be anywhere else.

    There are a few things you might consider (in addition to the great suggestions from above) that may help you:

    1. If you are more familiar with the classic editor, you can use a plugin in order to access what may be more familiar to you:

    2. You also may want to look into a good security plugin to make sure history does not repeat itself, so that your new installation stays safe from malware and hackers. Here is a list that may be useful to you:

    Finally, it may be possible to restore your old website if you have any backups–or, going forward, you can make backups to make sure your work stays safe. More information on that can be found here, if you would like:

    Thanks much. I’ve always thought of the two editors re posts rather than themes. I prefer Mac OS to Windows, Linux, or whatever; so I use the Mac desktop program MarsEdit as a blogging client. I use the online editor only for minor touch-ups on posts. The current and “classic” editors work equally as well for trivial stuff like that.

    With themes, I’ve always just chosen from among the options provided, and the decisions have been easy: (1) Choose your layout (single column, righthand sidebar, perhaps footers). (2) Choose/create your header image and upload. (3) Choose/type your header info, if any. (4) Select the widgets you want, and arrange them in the order you want. (5) Setup done. Start writing.

    But this time? I created the (persistent—top of every page) header image I wanted (conforming to the dimensions specified), uploaded it … and was presented with grotesquely distorted garbage.

    I’ll attack it again tomorrow. But I admit it’s discouraging.
