I haven’t received a “Spammer Caught” email since the 13th. Meanwhile, I am getting 20-30 spams in the moderation queue each day. (I set the option that a poster must have a previously approved comment.)

I upgraded this particular blog to the Jan. 1 nightly build on the 13th. (After testing that particular build – that’s why not a more recent one.) I have the Spaminator options set to 3 strikes and these that are going into the moderation queue all look like they should be hitting at least 5 or 6 strikes.

I’m not sure what information would be useful here, so:

    Operating system Linux
    Kernel version 2.4.21-27.0.1.ELsmp
    Apache version 1.3.33 (Unix)
    Path to sendmail /usr/sbin/sendmail
    PHP version 4.3.10
    MySQL version 4.0.22-standard-log
    cPanel Build 9.9.9-CURRENT 120
    Theme cPanel X v2.5.0
    Jan 1 build of WordPress
    Kitten’s Spaminator 1.0rc7

  • It’s my understanding, and I believe it’s documented in Kitten’s plugin, that for Spaminator to work on version 1.5, you must be using a build from at least January 5, 2005.

    Thanks. I missed that.

On this note, I installed this plugin this evening. When I went to the Plugins page in WP, the entry for it blew out my screen to an incredible width because there were TONS of &nbsp in the code. I tried replacing all those with regular spaces (all 9980 of them!), but then I got all semi-colons. Maybe I didn’t do a good search and replace, but I would think something like that would have been caught ages ago. I uninstalled it thinking I’d better check with the folks here first. Thoughts on this, anyone?

On a similar note, can you have too many spam-related plugins? I installed BlackList, but now I can’t even get test comments posted to my blog. I see them in the Edit/Comments page and they’re dimmed (why is that, anyway?), but I don’t see a button that lets me approve them…only delete or edit. I unchecked all the boxes in the configuration screen for this plugin, but each time I save it, they come back. What gives?

    Any advice?

Get a clean copy of the file and do a search and replace for ” ” instead of just “&nbsp”.

As for why there are 9900 blank spaces, are you sure you are talking about the same plugin file (kittens-spaminator.php). I don’t see a bunch of those space codes anywhere. Maybe you should download a fresh copy of the file.

    Well, I should have expected that – where I typed & n b s p ; it turned into a blank space. Do a search and replace for & n b s p ; (without the spaces) instead of just &nbsp.

Thanks, tomhanna. I’ll give it another whirl.
