• Hi folks

I’m using WP 2.7.1 and I was customising the KindOfBusiness theme. I was adding my links in to the footer, and this message appeared:

“This theme is released under creative commons license, all links in the footer should remain intact. To remove this message, please re-upload footer.php file of this theme again or you can buy premium version of this theme to remove links. If you do not have copy of this theme, you can download it from Nattywp.com.”

So I hit the browser back button, got the same message. Got out of the wp-admin, and tried to go back in, same message. Went to the front end of the site, and got the same message. This frickin theme has crashed my entire website!!!!!!!

I re-uploaded footer.php and hard refreshed the site… same message. I deleted my cache and cookies and tried to go back in… same message. I even shut down my entire computer, turned the modem off, cleared all private data, uploaded footer.php again, and still got the same message.

Anyone know how I can restore my website? Preferably get rid of this message once and for all?

Is this a feature of WP 2.7.1 or is it the theme? How can someone build a theme that crashes the entire website just because I edited the footer???

I have used WP for many sites and have never come across anything like this, I have even used this theme before. I feel really angry that I just can’t get my website back.

    Please help ??

    Cheers

  • It’s the theme. There’s something (a link?) within the original footer file that acts as a check when the theme loads. If it’s missing, you get an error. Not sure I like this kind of tactic myself but there you go…

Download a fresh copy of the theme, extract footer.php and re-upload just this file to the relvant themes folder.

    Thanks esmi

I think it’s a rotten tactic. At least there should be some kind of warning, like ‘don’t edit this link or else we will crash your entire site with an error message’…

Not only that, but when I re-uplaoded the fresh footer.php it didn’t get rid of it, until I deleted the whole theme (including customisation I’d done). Certainly won’t be using that theme again.

I respect copyright requirements, but I think if themes are being offered for free under commons, the user should be able to choose where the link goes, and not have the entire website crash when editing the footer…

Ah well, my rant is over. Shame on you NattyWP!!
