Tried upgrade to test out the media tags in the premium version. Went for the 14 day free trial but after the confirmation it caused a white screen on my site – both front-end and admin.

The only way to access my site was to delete the plugin.

Now when I try to re-install the Free version, it white screens on activation…

Not sure where to go from here.

Is there a setting I can delete in the database to be able to use the free version again?

  • Hmm, you’re the 2nd person to mention this issue, but thousands of others have no issues.

Can you try again, but this time edit wp-config.php file and set WP_DEBUG to true, then activate the free plugin? Send me any error you see with debug displaying fatal errors. Then delete the plugin folder again, and set WP_DEBUG back to false.

I have a feeling it might be a plugin conflict causing this, and I’d love to figure out what is conflicting.

Hi Rob – thanks for the quick reply.

Here is the error I get when I debug:

Warning: require_once(/nas/content/live/mysubdomain/wp-content/plugins/featured-images-for-rss-feeds/includes/premium/premium.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /nas/content/live/mysubdomain/wp-content/plugins/featured-images-for-rss-feeds/featured_images_in_rss.php on line 104

Fatal error: require_once(): Failed opening required ‘/nas/content/live/mysubdomain/wp-content/plugins/featured-images-for-rss-feeds/includes/premium/premium.php’ (include_path=’.:/usr/share/php:/usr/share/pear’) in /nas/content/live/mysubdomain/wp-content/plugins/featured-images-for-rss-feeds/featured_images_in_rss.php on line 104

As for the list of active plugins on the site, here are the others:

    Akismet
    Facebook Conversion Pixel
    Gravity Forms
    Gravity Forms ActiveCampaign Add-On
    Smart Podcast Player
    SumoMe
    tagDiv Social Counter
    WordPress MU Domain Mapping
    WP User Avatar
    WPBakery Visual Composer
    Yoast SEO

    Any assistance appreciated.

Is there a way to revert back to the free version?

Ah ok, thanks. That seems to be the premium version looking for the required file.

Did you activate the free Trial, and now trying to use the free version? It sees your site and user and sees that you have the free trial still, so it’s trying to use the premium file… but the free version doesn’t have it.

Can you install the premium/trial version again, and do the same thing, set WP_DEBUG to true and try activating it?

I want to see if it’s a different error.

    Thanks,
    Rob

That sounds exactly right. I think the issue stems from trying to install the premium version – after upgrading to the trial, I clicked on the link to install the premium version and got the white screen and then have got the white screen every time after. Where should I go to download the premium version? (And does this mean I can’t ever downgrade back to free?)

    Thx!

    Hi Mike,

Try the latest free version now… I think we’ve fixed that bug with the trial. It should have displayed the Download link, and then the free version should be deactivated, the premium version installed.

The free version has been updated to fix the error we found trial users were experiencing.

Found the email with the Premium version of the plugin, installed and working fine.

I am currently just on a 14 day trial – what happens if I want to drop back to the free version after that?

    Cheers! Thx

    Hi Mike,

The latest update should work fine now if you drop back to the latest free version later. ??

Glad to hear the email helped with this, I’ll remind others if they have a similar issue in the future.

    Thanks,
    Rob
