Keyboard shortcut for italics now kind of arbitrary

I type using keyboard shortcuts, and am accustomed to a standard “Ctrl-i on, Ctrl-i off” system where it’s easy to switch in and out of italicized text.

For a while now, WordPress seems to work on “Ctrl-i on, then hit Ctrl-i at least two, but sometimes more, times to turn italics off, or maybe not, sometimes.”

Is this an intentional ‘feature’ of new versions? Is there a setting that can be changed somewhere? Single-keystroke Ctrl-i for italics on, and another turning them back off, is really the best way for things to work for me.
