keeping widget area content when changing theme

    I have a site with different themes, but they all use the same base theme, I don’t have a functions.php in any child theme, instead I have all functions in a mu-plugin so all child themes share the same functions, so they all have the same widget areas etc.

    The only problem I have is, if a user changes the theme the widgets will not stay in the widget areas, they move to the inactivate widgets.

    As all my child themes share the same functions, does anyone know if it is possible to keep the widgets in the widget areas when a theme is changed?
