Keeping Track of RSS Feeds

Please don’t laugh at my newbie question, but what do I do with “RSS feed for this thread” links? Are they in lieu of subscribing to a thread and being informed by email of any new posts? If so, how do I use them.
Is there a program or web-based application that I can use to keep track of WordPress forum thread RSS feeds? Please tell me how you use them.
