So the new version of the twenty eleven theme is out and looks great, but from what I understand if you update that you lose any customizations you may have made. I’ll admit that I’ve been bad and customizing the theme directly instead of using a child theme, but is there any way to update the twenty eleven theme while keeping these customizations? It seems like even if I saved what I have now as a child theme and switched to that, I’d still need to keep track of the different customizations I’ve made and add those in to the updated version of twenty eleven, child theme or not.

    Correct.

Nope. Your only options now are to either:

    1. Save your custom version as a completely new standalone theme – but you will not get any of the benefits of the newly updated original theme.

    2. Bite the bullet and start creating a child theme from scratch.

ouch, that’s what I was afraid of. I definitely didn’t–but now clearly should have–kept track of the customizations so I could copy them with the update, so looks like I’m stuck with option #1 and I’ll just not download the updated version and keep trucking w/ this one. Thanks for the quick response!
