  • Don’t try to compete with Squarespace and Wix. We use WordPress because we want WordPress. I’m really just venting about the inclusion in 5.0 that is forcing me to revisit EVERY site I’ve built in the last 10 years to install the classic editor so my clients can continue to work. Really bad form guys

    @jonsisk surely your clients don’t expect a website to last 10 years without any upgrades? That seems unreasonable.

    You miss the point. Until WordPress 5.0 all my clients sites had run on auto-update. So, the clients got always the latest version without any time-consuming maintenance. Some weeks ago I updated a site from WP 2.9 to 4.9.8 with no hassle at all. Actually, I’ve never had any probleme with WP updates in the last 10 years. Gutenberg in WP 5.0 broke this rule.

    @cutu234 I didn’t experience any issues updating to version 5.0. What specific problems did you have, can you give an example?

    Is it possible you were you using the old WYSIWYG editor in a way you shouldn’t have been using it?

    I installed the classic editor plugin on all my client sites before updating to 5.0. So, no problems for me. On one site I really wanted to use Gutenberg. Unfortunately, saving or auto-saving didn’t work when Gutenberg was active. This was a brand new WP installation on a standard server. I’m sure, this problem could be solved. But why should I bother?

    A colleague of mine hasn’t been so lucky. She uses powerful framework themes (I never use such themes). Gutenberg broke the layout. This can be fixed, I know. And of course, you can always blame the theme and plugin developers.
