Keep thumbnail aspect ratio within square

Hi! I am running the latest versions of WP & NGG. I would like to have square thumbnails of let’s say 120x120px. Nevertheless, the thumbnail image itself must not be cropped, so they shall keep their aspect ratio (i.e. 90x120px or 120x90px) but shall be centered in a square 120×120 frame. This way a gallery is tidied up without the thumbnails being cropped.
Is there any way to achieve this?
