keep old website visible online while installing and design WP

  • Hi,
    My existing website and url need to be visible to the public, while I download, and get designing the new look website, blog and etc with WP.

    As a small business I need to keep my url because I’ve been going for 12 years.

    How do I add WP and tweak the design without deleting the exiting site – until the new one is ready for launch?

  • Install wordpress in folder and work on it until you ready to go live and then you can use wordpress from directory.

    You will need move your live site in folder and then follow instructions here

    You face a daunting challenge that no one seems to be able to resolve effectively. I’ve spent over 15hours trying to resolve this myself, and I am no newbie.

    We have a similar scenario. We want visitors to view our primary site at https://www.ourdomain.com and then click a link to view our blog which should reside exclusively in a sub-directory https://www.ourdomain.com/blog/. This way we can edit our blog till perfect and then just provide link from the homepage to view content.

    But this is not possible as WP only works in a top level directory and the index.php must be installed there. Of course you can store your WP files in a subdirectory, but that is not the solution, because we already have an index.php page there for our primary site and for SEO reasons do not want to delete it.

    Maybe if we put our heads together we can find a resolution. Good luck!

    WordPress can work in a subfolder. Just install it in yourdomain.com/blog/ and DON’T do what govpatel said. That’s all. Works fine.

    There are three scenarios:

    1. Install in root directory, core files in root directory.
    2. Install in root directory, core files in sub directory.
    3. Install in sub directory, core files in that same sub diretory.

    Govpatel’s link is for those with (3) wanting (2).

    It sounds like you have (1), have seen documentation on achieving (2), but Ipenstu thinks you want (3).

    This statement is incorrect. Do what Ipstenu said. WordPress’ index.php will be in the blog/ subdirectory and will not clash with the one in your root directory.

    Install WordPress into a subdirectory, that’s scenario (3) on TCBarrett’s list.

    When you’re ready follow the link provided by govpatel to move from (3) to (2).

    Hi everyone, new to this forum. I would like to know the following: I already have a website live, and I’ve been working on my new word press.org website, which now is ready to go live; and what I want to know is how to publish my new word press website. I want the old website to go away, and viewers to see the new one. Can anyone PLEASE give me the steps that I need to follow to do this change? Thanks so much!

    @tcbarrett – Number 3 has been difficult to achieve. But I’m not giving up so thanks for the inspiration. I’m trying a fresh install on a WP 3.3.1 in a new directory again. Great input, and don’t sweat the small stuff. I’ll post my results shortly.

    Hi everyone,

    I can’t thank you enough for all the suggestions.

    As I am such a newbie to WP and my existing website is so important to my livelihood, I’ve decided to do the full proper installation onto another url, get everything as I want and then move the whole thing across to my main url.

    I’m sure some of the other ways are easier, but this one at least I fully understand.
