Note: This is my first rodeo when it comes to wordpress

I used wordpress.com and made a basic idea of what I want my site to look like, loved the Karuna theme, and loved the added social menu, and the easy ability to change colors of the theme. I quickly realized I would need to use .org to add more plug ins I desired, so I went ahead and got hosting with blue host, installed wordpress, and added Karuna, and started customizing my site to be basically identical to the one I orginally made with wordpress.com.

However, it has come to my attention, that the social menu is not there (at least not how it is in the .com option) nor is the ability to change theme colors, I thought .org was supposed to be better, offer more customization, anything I can do to get the social links back? (they are displayed in the theme on www.remarpro.com, but I don’t actually see the option when customizing the site) On wordpress .com, I start customizing, Menus > + Add a Menu and it has the ‘Social Menu’ check box option under ‘Display Location’. Whereas, customizing right from my site, I go to Menus and the only option under ‘Display Location’ is header. I have also noticed that on my site I am lacking several widgets I had access to on .com, such as the facebook feed, the location w google map window, and the twitter feed.

I am a beginner at this, but if anyone could help me get the social menu and the above mentioned widgets back, I’d be very appreciative!!

Additional Note: I found additional plug ins to do the role of the widgets I liked on .co (although they don’t work as well)

Also, on .com the Karuna theme offers two menu locations, opposed to only offering one on .org, any reasoning for this?

  • Hi there,

You’ll want to install and activate the Jetpack plugin, as it is responsible for things like the Social Menu, Facebook/Twitter/Map Widgets, and more.

Once Jetpack is active and connected to your WordPress.com account, the Social Menu location should appear automatically. Also, in your Dashboard you can go to Jetpack > Settings > Appearance to turn on the Extra Sidebar Widgets module.

…the ability to change theme colors, I thought .org was supposed to be better, offer more customization

WordPress.com builds in some extras for color customization. However changes can be made to Karuna by using the Additional CSS area in the Appearance > Customize panel.

If you need help with changing the colors of a specific area/text, feel free to reply with the address to your site, and detail the specific color changes you’d like help with.

Thank You!! I am so grateful!! My site now looks how I originally intended!!

Wonderful! I’m glad I could help.

Also, I know I said to reply here about the color changes, but if you could create a new thread for those, that will help to keep things a bit more organized around here. ??

    Thanks!

    Jetpack > Settings > Appearance

    Can not find it….

    Found it
But no button to push …
