Just summary of article on front page

Most themes use the title to link to the permalink address for the article, so title = link shouldn’t be something you’ll need to worry about unless you’re creating your own theme.

I do however start each blog post with an image. With using excerpt, the images from the main page was removed (still in article when clicked)- any way around this?

This code gets placed in the body of your article where ever you want the paragraph to end. It will then give a link that says “read the rest of the story” Just insert the code, word press does the rest.
