Just moved site to another domain and can't get the custom permalinks working

I’ve just moved my wordpress site from one domain to another following the instructions. The site is now up and running on the new server but i can’t get the custom permalinks to work? If i switch back to default permalinks it works but i’ve tried saving that, then changing it back to custom but i just get 404 errors. When i switch it back it asks me to either make my root folder writable (which i don’t think is possible with godaddy) or add a web.config file with the code provided, i tried that but it broke the whole thing. I’ve moved from a linux server to a windows server if that sheds any light on it. I’ve been searching for an answer for ages but nothing i try seems to work ??

I also noticed my widgets aren’t working, this isn’t a big deal as i can add them all again but maybe it is all related. I did a find and replace for all the old links in the database but maybe i shouldn’t have changed them all?
