Just installed – pretty much lost.

  • Just so you know, I am a true beginner with WordPress and am basically stumbling along trying to get things done.

    Okay, I installed the plugin, FTP’d my media files from my desktop computer to a special folder on my server.

    I then go to the plugin expecting to be able to tell it which folder on the server holds my files then have the plugin add it to my media library. Apparently it does not work that way.

    instead, I am presented with the following:

    Quick Jump: WordPress Root | Uploads Folder | Content Folder

    File
    Parent Folder
    plugins/
    themes/
    upgrade/
    uploads/
    index.php
    File

    What do I do next?
    1) What is a Quick Jump and when would I use it?
    2) The folder I created on the server for my uploaded files does not seem to be accessible through the plugin.
    3) There is no mention of the medial library.

    How could I have so totally misunderstood this plugin in when I saw so many references to it as the best solution for adding media content in bulk from my desktop computer.??

    1) What is a Quick Jump and when would I use it?

    It gives you fast access to a given folder, The WordPress Root directory (ie. where you’d see files such as wp-load.php), the Uploads content (ie. wp-content/uploads/) and your content folder (wp-content/) which you seem to be looking at.

    2) The folder I created on the server for my uploaded files does not seem to be accessible through the plugin.

    Where did you create the folder? You should be able to locate the folder quite easily if you know where you’ve created it.

    3) There is no mention of the medial library.

    Correct. Although the files will be added to your media library.

    The plugin may not be the best option for you, depending on what you’re wanting to do.
    The media uploader inside WordPress is the best option for 99% of situations, even when adding files in bulk.

    1) I can access the upload folder I created on my server if I do it through FTP… what I meant was, there did not seem to be any ‘browse’ function in the plugin that would allow me to select that folder.

    2) How would I access that media loader inside WordPress… that may be sufficient for me.

    https://s.w.org/plugins/add-from-server/screenshot-1.png?r=989302 is the “Browse” functionality.
    You can see the parent directory displayed at the top of the screen.
    To go to one of those parent directories directly, click the folder name there. To enter a sub folder of the current folder, click the folder name in the list below.

    2) How would I access that media loader inside WordPress… that may be sufficient for me.

    Not sure what you’re asking here. But once you import the files using the plugin, they’ll appear in your Media Library.

    Okay, I get it now. Wonder why the conventional browse method wasn’t used? Doesn’t matter, really, so long as there is a way to navigate to the correct folder.

    The media uploader inside WordPress is the best option for 99% of situations, even when adding files in bulk.

    I was referring to this comment and wondering where to find that media uploader inside WordPress.

    I am a little surprised WordPress doesn’t have a media library management tab somewhere so users can add, delete, and change attributes of media files.
