• Hi everyone,

When I setup a new site I upload the zip file to the root directory…

Then do an unzip wordpress.zip in putty which unzips it in seconds…

But why is the WP file zipped up with a ‘wordpress’ folder.

There is probably a clever way to either tell the unzip command to ignore the wordpress folder, or I’m sure I could work out how to move the files.

But would it not make more sense to zip up the folders/files inside the wordpress folder, as I’m sure this is more logical.

I have resorted to creating a new zip with the correct folder structure…

    TIA, Dave

  • Lots of people like that ‘directory’ as they have WordPress installed in a subdirectory of their web-root.

But you found a way to do it. Also you can extract on your local machine then upload appropriately to your host with FTP (see Uploading WordPress to a remote host).

It is advisable to extract all the files/folders in a directory to avoid overwriting any existing files in the same directory. If you want to use another folder name then you can just extract it and rename the folder name.

@MicahelH – yes I used to ftp the files, but it takes forever compared with using putty and unzipping.

@kailash1 – I almost am always setting up a new site for clients and subsequent updates are done via admin !

    Cheers Dave
