• For the novice, better off just working through your web hosting built-in shopping cart service.

Unless you are a php programer, it offers very little in the way of modifying functionality and customization.

Even then, I think they either made it overly complex to force you to buy their additional plugins, or they just didn’t know better from the start and the additional plugins are more like fixes they can charge for.

Every page required me going in and modifying code in the child theme.

Forget it if you don’t want the hassle.

The look and feel of the store can be changed through themes. Of course, if you want to Customise Something you need to do it in whatever language the software is written in. I cannot see how you “web hosts shopping system” would be any different. In fact, it’s probably closed source and Harder to customise?

What are you missing? Core covers most use cases – used core alone for my own stores in the past. Rule of thumb – if it benefits all store owners its core. If it’s niche it’s plugin.

If something truly is missing, I’m sure a developer would have released it on .org for free by now, but ultimately the point needs to be raised or it won’t be added. Contribute to the project. “They” is anyone who wants to get involved.

Agree to Mike. Bmilliot’s review sounds way too negative for me. Running the free ecommerce solutions from hosters is several levels lower in almost every aspect (customization, modification, options, performance). I’m running three WC shops, actually, and have done most modifications either with additional plugins (that costed from $10 to $99, but thats nothing compared to other e-commerce soltions); with the WC settings and with the theme options. Have added one line of php code in the theme functions.php file to get the “add to basket” link in product listing pages, and I am not php developer at all, but have done lot’s of CSS modifications in the child theme since I’m CSS developer.
