• I’m having a ton of problems working in the backend. Doing simple things like adding a header, the update btton is greyed out. Then minutes after, I get page timeouts, 504 gateway timeouts, then I get kicked out and the site goes down. This is happening almost every time I try to edit anything. It’s a gutenberg site, no page builders etc. After 10 mins, site comes back online again, I try again and get so far before the whol cycle repeats itself..

I’ve checked the logs and there are a ton of these errors below. This is beyond my limited knowledge how to fix. I’ve googled a lot and all I could find was something about reinstalling the .htaccess file – which I have done but Iit hasn’t worked. Anyone any ideas on hw to fix this?

  • The two messages have nothing to do with your problem. I would recommend that you contact the support of your hoster about these.

I did contact my hosting company and they suggested I come here for advice. They said they are not wordpress experts but did confirm it was not a hosting/server issue. They said that wp-json is the REST Api for my site and the errors indicate that somethng is happening when editing a post – possibly editing a post that does not specfy the rest api. I am repeating what they said.

My server (VPS) runs only one website plus an identical staging wp site. When I am editing posts on the staging site the logs show no errors and I have no problems with the site. When I am editing posts on the live site, the errors occur as above.

Lastly, they said other people have reported similar problems to mine which turned out to be wordpress related..

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I have never seen or experienced anything like it. If your hoster says something like this, then it seems that there are always problems like this in their environment.

I find it particularly strange that the page simply doesn’t work for 10 minutes. That is something that has to be clarified in the hosting. WordPress itself only uses their technology.

To get closer to the cause, I would give you the following tips:
Look in the WordPress backend under Tools > Site Health to see if there are any anomalies.
Deactivate all plugins as a test to rule them out as the cause.
Try changing the theme to a standard theme like TwentyTwentyOne.

I’ve done all the site health stuff etc, and it’s all good. The firewall was blocking my IP then letting me back in.
Plesk and my hosts have been looking at this further and I’m waiting on them to come back to me. Something wordpress related is using up all the memory.
