• QUESTION:
why do my jpg files increase many times after uploading to media library?

    WHAT HAPPENS:
homepage slider pics’ dimensions: 1600×700 pixels. all files are jpg.
file size after tinypng compression: 132kb (jpg)
file size after drag/dropping same file to WP/media library: 436 KB
*the above-described increase happens on all jpg media files i upload. i have a pic-intensive cite so this has been a pain.

** workaround that i no longer want to do (or, ??shouldn’t have to do??): I click Edit Image in WP/media library. I change Scale from 700 to 695 (1589×695). WP automatically changes file name by adding a series of numbers to the end of the file-name, eg, “-e1593101126593.jpg”. the subsequent file’s size reduces to 172kb (which was the file size before i take it to tinyp’).

i work hard to reduce file size but WP/media library defeats that; i work hard at SEO for all pics but my workaround adds some funky numbers to file-name.
    i love WP — help….

There might be some function snippet in your theme’s functions.php. Or, a plugin may be doing it. Just double check.

    thx for the breadcrumb.

how do you recommend i double check?

my theme & 14 pluggins are super standard. but i see your point.
can’t i drag/drop media into the backend folder, then find it in the front-end (at the same size….).
